(Integration)

LBC Home Groups Ministry

Charter

Author: Lars Anderson

Updated: 19 Aug 2013

Mission Statement:

The LBC Home Groups ministry seeks to enhance the community of relationships within LBC by fostering

Christian fellowship and practical love for one another through the establishment and maintenance of

geographically focused small groups.

Purpose:

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet

together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day

drawing near.”

Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV

Primary Purposes:

• Fellowship

Small churches have little need for small groups. The larger a church becomes numerically, the

more difficult genuine fellowship and relationship building becomes, especially during regular

church services. People can often experience their relationships increasing in number faster

than any of their relationships are increasing in depth. Home Groups seek to compensate for

this phenomenon and enhance this critical dimension of church life [Acts 2:42; Heb 10:24-25]

• Practical Love and Prayer for One Another

As a church grows in size, it can also often become more difficult for people to practice the “one

another” commands of Scripture. Home Groups create a context to facilitate stirring up one

another to love and good works, encouragement, practical care, intercessory prayer, and

ultimately more opportunities for the congregation to follow Jesus and operate as an effective

and loving body. Regardless of the church size, Home Groups aid in allowing the church to be

“the church” during the week. [Rom 12:10-13; 1Cor 12:26; 2Cor 1:4; Gal 6:2,10; Heb 10:24-25]

• Supplementing Pastoral Care

A related challenge for Pastor-Elders as the church grows numerically is their knowledge of the

congregation and the logistics of shepherding and caring for a larger flock. The Home Group

leadership can greatly aid the Pastors in at least two ways by developing close relationships with

those in their Home Groups. First, the leaders will provide first hand care and direction to those

in their Home Group. Second, the leaders will keep the Pastors informed of needs and concerns

within their Home Group, so that Elder prayer, counsel, or other action can be taken if

necessary. [Prov 27:23; Acts 20:28]

Secondary Purposes:

• Biblically Centered Discussion and Spiritual Growth

While education is not a primary focus, there needs to some material around which the Home

Group discussion is centered. Otherwise, the Home Group discussions can easily devolve into

“group therapy”. While there is freedom allowed in the structure of the meetings, the

fellowship should be fueled by the spiritual growth of those in the Home Group through the

power of God’s Word in their lives. The materials used for the Home Group discussion can take a

variety of forms, from Bible studies to Christian books. Video series can also be used, but

caution must be exercised as this format is not often conducive to adequate discussion,

fellowship, or prayer time (see “Primary Purposes” above.) All materials must be Elder

approved. See “Requirements” section below. [Eph 4:11-16; 1Tim 4:13; 2Tim 3:16-17; Heb 4:12]

• Pastoral Leadership Development

The Home Groups are also an excellent format for the development of pastoral leaders. In a

sense, the Home Group is a microcosm of the larger church. Effective leadership in a Home

Group will require love, sacrifice, patience, hospitality, a caring pastoral heart, doctrinal integrity

(not only knowledge and accuracy, but the humble spirit and wisdom in which truth must be

conveyed and conflicts resolved), and the relational skills to deal with a variety of demographics

and circumstances. The Home Group leaders will encounter many opportunities to develop their

pastoral leadership during the life of their Home Groups, and also in their assistance to and

mentoring from the Elders. [Prov 27:23; Acts 20:28; 2Tim 2:1-3]

• Integration of New Members

One way new people can become connected and established at LBC is through Home Groups. As

groups are formed in various parts of the Denver metro area, each can become a hub of

fellowship and a means of integration for those new to LBC who live near that meeting location.

[Rom 12:13, 16:1-2; 1Pe 4:9-10]

• Community Evangelism

As with all LBC ministries we want to share the love of Jesus and ultimately His gospel with the

unsaved. Because of the general geographic focus of the Home Groups and their specific

locations, there may be significant opportunities for relationship building with neighbors, etc...

See “Recommendations” section below. [John 13:35; 1Cor 9:19-23]

Requirements:

Unlike various Bible studies or other less formal gatherings in homes, the LBC Home Group ministry is an

officially sanctioned extension of LBC (in terms of its teaching, not in terms of meeting location or

childcare). This being the case, the Elders are accountable to the Lord for the teaching and pastoral care

administered by the LBC Home Group leadership [Acts 20:28; Heb 13:17]. Therefore, Elder approval will

be needed for all key decisions related to the LBC Home Groups. The following are not exhaustive, but

are examples of key decisions:

• Appointment of Leaders & Establishment of New Home Groups

Elder approval is needed for the formation of a new Home Group and the appointment of all

LBC Home Group leaders. The general model for establishing LBC Home Group leadership will

follow these three criteria:

    Shared Leadership

As with the leadership of LBC itself and of each LBC ministry, for accountability and a variety of

other reasons, the leadership of any LBC Home Group will consist of a plurality or team of

     leaders (two or more).

     Qualified Leadership

It is recognized that not all LBC Home Group leaders will share equally in the teaching or leading

of discussions, and that some leaders will focus more on other aspects of this ministry.

Nevertheless, all leader candidates require Elder examination to ensure all doctrinal differences

are understood. Each candidate must read carefully through the full LBC Doctrinal Statement

and discuss with an Elder any and all differences of belief or opinion. In most cases, differences

are not disqualifiers, but they are required to be understood by the Elders. In addition, a gentle

pastoral spirit is equally critical for this leadership to be effective. An overarching requirement is

that the Elders have established a sufficient relationship with the candidate and know his

character well enough to entrust this responsibility to him. [Acts 20:28; 1Tim 4:16; James 3:1]

    Male Leadership

Since there is a cross-demographic element of LBC sanctioned biblical instruction involved

during the leading of discussions, the leaders will be male, in accordance with the LBC Doctrinal

    Statement. [1Tim 2:12]

• Selection of Discussion Materials

Elder approval is also needed for the selection of books, media, and other materials being used

in the Home Group discussion. Material must be Biblically focused. Material containing relatively

small portions of theologically controversial material is not necessarily disallowed. However, the

strategy for handling such material and the related discussion must be well understood and

approved by the Elders. [Acts 2:42, 20:28; 1Jn 4:1; 2Tim 3:16-17]

• Changes in Home Group Structure

The general intent is that a Home Group will be welcoming to new LBC people who live near

their meeting location. As a Home Group grows in size, there may be a natural need or desire to

split the group and form multiple groups. In general, this is encouraged. It is indicative of a

healthy Home Group. However, Elder approval is needed in decisions to split groups in order

protect the infrastructure of relationships that have been established and to ensure that each

new group formed is positioned for success. Conversely, for a variety of reasons, not all Home

Groups will survive. With very few exceptions, every Home Group will have a lifecycle. This

should not be viewed as failure, but rather acknowledged as an aspect of this dynamic ministry.

In order to help people find other Home Groups or form new ones, Elder oversight is also

required in decisions to terminate or disband a Home Group. [Prov 27:23; Acts 20:28]

Recommendations:

The following, though not strictly required, are recommendations:

• Discussion Materials

One great option for quick implementation is a sermon-based curriculum. There are a number of

reasons a sermon based curriculum works well for discussion material:

1. People will listen to the sermon differently and study the passage at a deeper level

2. Related to #1, sermon note taking increases, because they know they will discuss it later

3. It gives people a chance to discuss the passage further and think about (and implement) life

applications of the scripture

4. The preparation time required for the leader reduces dramatically

5. It increases participation and engagement, especially for busy people who may not have time to

devote extra energy toward an additional study; Everyone who comes will all have a minimum

of 45 minutes of context already (listening to the sermon), plus any additional study they have

done. For those who miss the sermon, it is generally available on the LBC website within 2 hours

after services complete.

While creativity in discussion questions are encouraged, here is a sample discussion format that

could work for ANY passage / sermon:

• Read passage

• Recap outline in bulletin

• Discussion Questions:

o What in the passage struck you most?

o Anything you were surprised by or disagreed with in the sermon?

o How does what you learned affect your view of God?

o How does what you learned affect your view of yourself?

o Where do you feel your life needs to change as a result?

o What steps can you take to make those changes?

• Read next week’s passage

If the meetings are weekly, you can follow the above as is. If the meetings are less frequent, you

would need to decide which passage you will discuss (e.g. the sermon prior to the meeting).

• Commitment and Dynamic Membership

It is recommended that when people join the group they commit to attend for the remainder of that

semester. It is also recommended that at the end of each semester, all Home Group members be

encouraged to reevaluate their participation. Small group literature seems to indicate that one of

the pitfalls of small groups is that people stay too long, or feel unhealthy obligations. We need to

acknowledge there changes in life, and that change can be very positive. People may want to take a

break or switch to another group. Everyone should be encouraged to make this decision at the end

of each semester, and not feel guilty for doing so. This dynamic aspect of mixing things up is part of

what gives all groups new life.

• Meeting Logistics

Location

It is recommended that the Home Group meets primarily in the home of one of the leaders. The

home adds a vital component to the intimate family atmosphere representative of the primary

Home Group purpose, and models the importance of hospitality.

Frequency

A specific meeting frequency is not required. However, the following recommendation is given. The

Home Group should meet often enough to meet the needs of the group, but not so often that

people cannot commit to attending regularly. As a general rule to keep momentum in the group

strong and to protect against energy drain of the leadership, the meeting frequency should err

toward leaving people in the group wanting more versus leaving people feeling indifferent about

whether they met less frequently. A good rule of thumb is once every two weeks and less frequently

during the summer.

Depending on the demographic of the Home Group, child care may be necessary to ensure

reasonable focus and communication during structured discussions. It is recommended that the

group cooperates and shares to provide some kind of oversight means for small children to be cared

for and monitored in a separate room or area during the more structured portion of the Home

Group meeting.

The elders have agreed to subsidize child care at $10 per Home Group meeting. We realize not all

Home Groups need financial assistance, and also that this will not cover the entire amount, but

hopefully it helps. Please only utilize the reimbursement for regular Home Group meetings, and not

fellowship-only or dinner-only meetings.

The process for reimbursement is as follows (This can be performed by the Home Group leader or a

delegate childcare coordinator in your group):

- Prior to the 20th of each month email the Chapel Secretary - (office@littletonbiblechapel.org)

and cc: the home group leader (if this is being performed by a delegate)

- Include in the email:

- The leader(s) of the home group

- The name and address to whom the check should be written and mailed

- The number of times the home group met (for regular meetings) that month, and

amount of reimbursement expected (#meetings x $10)

You may also contact the chapel (office@littletonbiblechapel.org) for a list of babysitters that have

expressed interest or have availability. These are not official LBC babysitters, nor have they all been

vetted by LBC. Each home group host is responsible for vetting and selecting the babysitter using

their own judgment. Babysitting provided in a home is not an extension of LBC. Accordingly, LBC

has no liability for babysitting issues that may occur in the respective homes.

• Geographic Commonality and Demographic Diversity

The demographic focused LBC Family Groups (i.e. College & Career, Honeymooners, POPS, etc…)

comprise those who share a similar life-situation, which drives focused content selection and

discussion. The LBC Home Groups ministry seeks instead to create a fellowship primarily among

those who share a similar geographical residence, but whose ages and life circumstances may vary.

It is recognized, however, that a demographically homogeneous group is easier to develop and more

likely to bond in its early stages, and so is not discouraged.

• Evangelism

As is the case with all LBC ministries, the Home Groups should have an evangelistic component. It is

recognized that a Home Group first needs to form, bond, and develop into a small loving

community. Once this community exists, it is encouraged (as with the larger church) to extend its

impact in some way to unbelievers for exposure to the love of Christ and ultimately the gospel unto

salvation.

• Service Projects

One means to enhance fellowship is to participate together in service opportunities. Depending on

the time and energy spent by the group already caring for each other (its first priority), there may be

capacity to volunteer together for the greater good of LBC or the broader community. This can be

done through service projects at LBC (e.g. communion clean up, help in Nursery, etc…) or service for

LBC needy/elderly. The Elders/LBC Administrator can direct in practical ideas and Deacon needs. The

preference is that the Home Group serves LBC, but they may also choose to serve people or

organizations outside LBC (e.g. helping neighbors, volunteering for charity, etc…)

Soli Deo gloria!
